CAMP COUNSELLOR

MISSION STATEMENT

To give every camper and staff an opportunity to experience a Christian community, where they are challenged to develop themselves spiritually, physically, and emotionally in a safe, nurturing, and fun outdoor environment.

HOURS: Seasonal Full Time (June 20 – Aug 12, 18 yrs +)

REPORTS TO: Program/Assistant Coordinator

Camp Counsellor will work closely with the Camp Coordinator to provide over sight of the Camp Kannawin 2022 summer camping. Camp Counsellor will work to promote the purpose of Camp Kannawin, which is to develop and nurture a Christian Faith and character in children and youth through living together in a church camping community. The Camp Counsellor will provide support to campers, staff, users and visitors who are involved in the life and ministry of Camp Kannawin.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Counsellor is responsible for the care and supervision of up to ten campers in a community living environment. He/she will provide leadership to participants in the planned camping programs – day, overnight and theme camps. The Counsellor is responsible for supervising the assigned campers, cabin leaders and Leaders in Training (LIT’s).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Have experience working with children and /or youth.
  • Self-motivating and self-directing.
  • Relate well to children, youth and adults.
  • Promote and follow the Leading with Care & Sexual Harassment Policies of the Presbyterian Church in Canada to ensure the safety of children, youth and vulnerable adults.
  • Willing to accept supervisory responsibility and work as part of a team.
  • Be adaptable and flexible as individual situations warrant.
  • Asset to have Standard First Aid certificate with a minimum of CPRC (including introduction to AED).
  • Flat water Canoe Instructor’s certificate from Paddle Alberta (or equivalent) would be an asset. Note: Camp Kannawin may offer this course as part of their KREW training.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

A. Program

  1. Welcome assigned campers, assist them with moving into their assigned cabin, and introduce them to their cabin mates.
  2. Assist campers as needed (identify and meet their needs, recognize opportunities to help with problem solving, and help campers meet their personal goals)
  3. Provide opportunities within the camp setting so that each camper experiences personal success.
  4. Take an active leadership role in meal times, chores, and program activities
  5. Work cooperatively with the program team to ensure campers are – safe, arrive at scheduled activities on time, participate and obey all camp rules.
  6. Assist with programming instruction; this may include Bible study, crafts, games, campfire, water front activities, and outdoor education activities.
  7. Mentor assigned Cabin Leaders and Leaders in Training.

B. Christian Community

  • Welcome campers, parents, volunteers and guests.
  • Attend all required training sessions and KREW meetings.
  • Act as a good ambassador for Camp Kannawin.
  • Participate in all camp activities except during scheduled time off.
  • Comply with camp rules.
  • Ensure that all campers comply with camp rules and the Camp Coordinator is notified of any violation of rules.

C. Other

  • Participate in the end of week site cleaning.
  • Assist the Outdoor Educator as requested
  • Participate in the maintenance and cleanliness of common areas.
  • Complete the self-assessment portion of the camp evaluation process.
  • Assist the Camp Coordinator with other duties that may be assigned.
