Junior Counsellor
Job Summary
Junior Counsellors are volunteer staff that assist in the leadership of groups of campers in grades K-9 through our
summer camp programs. These overnight and day camps run Monday through Friday and include a wide variety of
activities and out-trips. Junior Counsellors partner with a Counsellor to supervise and mentor campers and assist with
program facilitation.
Camp Warwa is led by a collaborative leadership community. Our organizational culture is cooperative, welcoming and
carries a strong commitment to mentoring and professional development.
Camp Warwa will provide training at the beginning of the summer season, as well as additional training opportunities
throughout the year. Junior Counsellors are also invited to participate in a weekend leadership program in the Fall,
Winter and Spring seasons to help them grow and develop as outdoor professionals. Junior Counsellors report to our
Program Coordinators.
Responsibilities and Duties
Core responsibilities of Junior Counsellors include:
Assisting with the supervision and care of campers
Attending camp-provided training to learn counselling techniques and some program facilitation skills
Assisting Counsellors with program facilitation
Performing various camp facility support tasks such as helping with cleaning, cooking and program setup
Working as part of a team
Qualifications and Skills
Junior Counsellors will be passionate about making a difference in the lives of children. They will possess integrity,
communication skills and value both community and nature. Standard First Aid with CPR-C are required. Junior
Counsellors must have completed Grade 10 but cannot have completed grade 12. Experience working with children or
in outdoor pursuits/recreation are assets.
Salary and Benefits
Junior Counsellors are volunteer staff members. Camp Warwa pays volunteers a $125/week honorarium. Benefits
include on-site room and board, and access to Wi-Fi and laundry. Accommodation is provided in a shared staff room
within our camper accommodations.
Start and End Dates
Summer Season: June 23 – August 23
While Junior Counsellors are required to attend Summer Staff training in the last week of June, they will mostly work
between 3 and 6 weeks during summer camp operations, depending upon availability and camp requirements.
Junior Counsellors will be asked to provide availability for a minimum of 4 weeks, to better accommodate the
scheduling of all in the position.
