Job Description

Easter Seals Camp Horizon in Bragg Creek offers high quality adventure based outdoor education to a wide variety of user groups. In the spring and fall we host school classes, band camps, guides, scouts, retreats, and reunions. In the summer we specialize in an accessible, and inclusive summer camp experience for individuals with disabilities. We offer programs such as white water rafting, rock climbing, camping, arts and crafts, leadership training and much, much, more!
The Outdoor Education Programmer is two-fold. In the spring you will be assisting groups with general outdoor education activities; hiking, ropes course, camping,
orienteering etc. Then in the summer you will transition into what we call “Element Programmers”. Earth, Air, or Spark. Each Element Programmer is responsible for a different activity at camp. These positions will require exceptional communication skills, programming skills, organization, and the ability to regularly asses risk.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Plan and deliver inclusive, creative, adventure based outdoor programming
  • Continually ensuring the safety of all participants through proactive risk management and following industry guidelines for best practice
  • Maintain all gear and equipment associated with your programs
  • Have familiarity with local camping and hiking areas
  • Plan and implement training for staff to assist in facilitating Element Programs
  • Review logistics and risk management with the Camp Lead for all activities
  • Assist with set up/take down/cleaning of all programming and meals
  • Assist counsellors with groups as needed.
  • Complete necessary administrative tasks for Element Programs
  • General pre-camp set up; trail clean up, gear organization, program planning etc.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Post-secondary education (complete or in progress) in outdoor education, leadership, disability studies, arts or equivalent.
  • Experience working with individuals with various forms of disabilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience leading backcountry trips
  • Excellent risk management skills
  • Knowledge of Leave No Trace Principles
  • Excellent group management techniques
  • Alberta license Class 4
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C considered an asset
  • Wilderness First Aid 80hr considered an asset
  • Experience with bike maintenance considered an asset
  • Any additional outdoor certifications considered an asset:
    • Outdoor Counsel of Canada: Field Leader Hiking or Overnight certificate
    • ACCT Ropes Course Instructor certificate

Working Conditions

  • Spring contract period: March 4th – June 4th 2022
  • Summer contract period: June 6th- August 31st 2022
  • Spring: 3-5 days a week 8+ hrs. a day
  • Summer: 5 days a week Monday-Friday. 10+hr days with the occasional weekend.
  • Working outdoors each day in all kinds of weather
  • Working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and abilities

Conditions of Employment

  • Satisfactory completion of a police and vulnerable sector check
