Cook Assistant – Summer Camp (Seasonal)
Location: Red Deer County, AB (on-site, accommodation provided)
Contract Length: 12 weeks
About the Role
We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Cook Assistant to support kitchen operations at our residential summer camp. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and takes pride in maintaining a clean and organized kitchen.
The Cook Assistant works under the direction of the Head Cook to help prepare and serve meals for up to 300 people, including campers and staff.
Room, board, and meals are fully provided for the duration of the contract.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Service
- Assist with preparing and serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks
- Support meal planning and service for large groups
- Prepare simple foods such as salads, sandwiches, and desserts
- Assist with washing, peeling, and basic food prep tasks
Kitchen Sanitation & Cleanup
- Clean pots, pans, kitchen equipment, and workstations
- Assist with dishwashing and sanitizing all kitchenware
- Clean dining areas and support overall kitchen organization
- Manage garbage and recycling to maintain a clean environment
Support & Operations
- Assist with accommodating dietary needs and food allergies (e.g., gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan)
- Help receive, rotate, and properly store food and supplies
- Support inventory organization and stock management
- Follow all food safety and sanitation standards
Required Qualifications
- Minimum age of 16 years
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team
- Strong work ethic and willingness to take on a variety of kitchen tasks
- Ability to work long, active days in a fast-paced environment
- Physically able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a commercial kitchen, restaurant, or camp setting
- Food Safety or Food Handler Certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Experience working with children or in camp environments
- FIrst Aid and CPR
- Police record and vulnerable record check
Working Conditions
- This is a live-in position; relocation to camp is required
- Accommodation, meals, and utilities are provided
- Work takes place in a busy camp kitchen environment from mid may to End of August
- Schedule includes long, flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
