Head Cook / Kitchen Manager – Summer Camp (Seasonal)
Location: Red Deer County, AB (on-site, accommodation provided)
Contract Length: 12 weeks
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Head Cook / Kitchen Manager to lead kitchen operations at our residential summer camp. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment while providing nutritious, high-quality meals for a vibrant camp community.
This role is responsible for preparing three meals per day for up to 300 people (approximately 200 campers and 70 staff at peak capacity). Camper numbers gradually decrease over the course of the summer.
Room, board, and meals are fully provided for the duration of the contract.
Key Responsibilities
Meal Planning & Preparation
- Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily for campers and staff
- Produce consistent, high-quality meals in a high-volume kitchen environment
- Prepare a daily evening dessert or snack for campers
- Adjust menus and quantities based on changing attendance throughout the season
- Ensure meals meet nutritional standards and accommodate a wide range of dietary needs and food allergies
Kitchen Management & Operations
- Oversee daily kitchen workflow to ensure efficient, on-time meal service
- Manage food inventory, ordering, and supply levels throughout the season
- Apply food costing knowledge to support budget control and efficient menu planning
- Minimize food waste through effective planning and organization
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and food safety
- Coordinate with camp leadership on schedules, special events, and dietary requirements
Required Qualifications
- Experience working in a commercial, institutional, or high-volume kitchen
- Proven ability to cook for large groups (100+ people)
- Strong knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and kitchen best practices
- Experience with food ordering, inventory control, and food cost management
- Solid understanding of dietary requirements and food allergy protocols
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to work long, physically active days in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in camps, schools, or large-scale food service environments
- Food Safety Certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Experience supervising or leading kitchen staff
- Minimum current First Aid
- Clean Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector
Additional Information
- This is a live-in position; relocation to camp is required
- Accommodation, meals, and utilities are provided
- Candidates must be able to commit to the full 12-week contract
